INFORMATION

OVERVIEW

Soho House began in London's Greek Street in 1995, as a members’ club for the local artists and actors. Over two decades, Soho House has opened itself up to creative communities across the globe by establishing clubs across more than 20 locations Soho House in Mumbai is set on Juhu Beach and features a club, rooftop restaurant, bar and a library. It holds regular events for its members as well as the general public drawing the larger creative community of India.

BRIEF

Each Soho House across the globe also houses its own art collective. The Soho House Mumbai hoped to engage their members with contemporary Indian and South Asian artists represented at the property, and their practises.

APPROACH SUGGESTED

The Art X Company offered to curate and programme exclusively for the members of Soho House Mumbai. The curated events were aimed at having a special focus on artists whose artworks are already showcased at the House.

OUTCOME

Three events were curated between November 2019 and March 2020.

The first event, titled, 100 Questions on Art, Design, Dream, Delusion, Memory, Materiality, Origin, Originality and the Frailty of Humanity, was an artist talk and game play by renowned artists Thukral and Tagra.

The second event was organised during the annual Mumbai Gallery Weekend, with an exclusive walkthrough - curated by Mumbai Midtown Arts Collective & The Art X Company, featuring four galleries in Midtown Mumbai. The members met and engaged with works of artists such as  hosted a special guided walkthrough for Soho House members. 

The third event held, before the lockdown was imposed was, WIP - Women In Process // Art, Design & Food, featuring three incredible women—Leaders of their worlds in Art, Design and Food. 

The first event after the lockdown was an art picnic in Alibaug. Members started the day with a guided walkthrough of the local Dashrath Patel Museum, followed by lunch at Saffron Stays villa. Post-lunch, there was a short visit to ceramic artist Anjali Aney’s studio. The evening ended with a guided walkthrough of The Guild Art Gallery’s latest exhibition - ‘WORKS ON PAPER - Mapping Subjects & Methods’.
